Invited onto the Board of Carers Trust following the agreement to create the merged organisation. Responsibilities included supporting the management team helping them continue to transform Carers Trust, sitting on the Audit Committee, Board Nominations Committee, and the Board of Carers Enterprise Ltd (CEL), a subsidiary of Carers Trust. Carers Trust achieved a significant breakthrough, being selected as The Cooperative Group’s Charity of the Year for 2013. I had the privilege of overseeing this relationship and being the interface to Coops Board members / Management Board, experiencing first hand the contribution from the Coop’s 100,000 passionate employees, attending many events to speak/promote awareness of unpaid Carers, with the result that this outstanding partnership raised over £5m to support a plethora of projects for unpaid Carers. I continued working closely with the Carers Trust Fundraising team to support ongoing development and execution of a refined Fundraising strategy to support the many projects needed to help carers, and to meet MPs to influence government's strategy in support of carers at national level. I passionately supported two key projects i.e. Respite breaks for carers where relationships were established with a conglomerate of hotels to provide breaks of 2-5 nights, and Young Carers in School (aged 5-16, schools put support structures in place to identify these children/understand their pressures/and support them as necessary). I presented at several schools to promote / recognise this fabulous work. As Chairman, I led the Board of Trustees, supported the leadership team, engaged in discussion with key supporters, and presented in many notable locations to prospective donors, and supporting our patron HRH The Princess Royal, with whom there were frequent touchpoints due to her passionate support. I found myself entering a demanding period of its evolution: the UK budget deficit was enormous resulting in Government reducing its funding of the 3rd sector, and a merger was being progressed with Crossroads Care to enhance the services that could be offered to unpaid Carers in a more efficient manner. I was immediately asked to join the Merger Steering Group and to consider the complexities of the economic context and the need to enhance service provision to unpaid Carers. I provided guidance on planning, driving, and rolling out the transformation plan for the new merged entity being established. In addition, I had the challenge of overseeing design, agreement and launch of the new Brand, ‘Carers Trust. The long hours outside of my ‘day job’ required to help make this happen were immensely rewarding, and the personal satisfaction continues as Carers Trust grows in stature and sustainability to help many more unpaid Carers.
