As the point to point business suffered from a downturn in demand Filtronic acquired the assets of an R&D company which had developed several products for the Wireless Infrastructure business sector including a novel autotune filter. I was initially involved on working to get this product into production and since have gone on to design and develop a range of filters and diplexers which form part of the combining structures used in cellular communications systems and base stations.I was also instrumental in developing and initiating the production of a series of Terrestrial TV interference filters which were required to mitigate the co-channel interference of the new 4G signals.

As the Cable Communications business was in decline I secured a position within the newly formed Broadband division which had products designed for the point to point link market. My role was within the Waveguide (WG) filter department where I took on a suite of new designs which covered the range 7-38Ghz. There were around 10 frequency bands each with multiple product variants and production quantities peaked at around 2000 units/week. I was responsible for introducing the next generation designs for 3 customers. I was promoted to Technical Manager and was the technical authority for all the WG products.

I was selected from the engineering team at Filtronic Components to help set up a new venture to address the rapidly growing market within the Cable TV industry during the latter half of the 1990's. I was involved in the design and development of a range of products used in the hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC) cable distribution network. These used a combination of LEF and passive splitter technology. I also gained experience working with active circuits including GaAs FET, hybrid amplifiers and fiber optic transceivers. As I progressed within the group I was promoted to Higher Senior Engineer grade.

    • Product Line Manager
      • Jul 1985 - Jul 1996

I was initially employed as a graduate Engineer working on Suspended Substrate Stripline (SSS) Filters and multiplexers. I worked on the design and development of a range of filters from simple lowpass designs to more complicated multiplexers. I progressed to take on responsibility for particular key account customers. Around 1990 I took over responsibility for the Lumped Element filter (LEF) Product line. At the peak of the business I was responsible for a team of 5 engineers and technicians.
