Bio
Brian Arnell
Steven Schwartz is an exceptional editor, writer, and project manager. I worked with Steven at World Trade Press, a publisher of online reference products for academic, library, travel, and corporate markets. During his time with the company, Steven managed several editorial projects that were vital to new products we developed. The first of these was a series of nearly 100 city guides for an international travel product, covering topics that included each city's attractions, excursions, nightlife, shopping, and restaurants. As a copy editor on the project, Steven managed a network of travel writers and worked with them to create outstanding articles that related the most useful information and the most interesting aspects of the city. For a separate product for corporate clients, Steven created pieces on the business cultures of 100 countries. He first created articles on how meetings are conducted in these countries, including preparation, scheduling, business attire, meeting protocol, and decision making. A second aspect of the project was an overview of negotiating style. This involved evaluating each country's cultural tendencies in ten different aspects of negotiation, such at attitude, communication style, and time sensitivity. The material was complex and required a high level of analysis, and Steven turned it into one of the centerpieces of this new product. Another major assignment was a world music project, which featured lengthy descriptions of the musical traditions of 185 countries. As with other projects, Steven managed this independently. He recruited a set of writers with experience in the musical styles of different regions. Steven kept the project on track in terms of budget and time, and he worked with photo editors and other staff members to find photos and videos that augmented the written content. Everyone involved in the project felt that these music articles were superior to any other world music overviews available. Finally, for a foreign language product, Steven developed extensive vocabulary lists—of some 14,000 words altogether—as well as important format and interface ideas. With these and other projects, I found Steven to be incredibly talented. He was able to create beautiful copy under tight deadlines and to manage all aspects of development. Steven was also a real pleasure to work with. Everyone at World Trade Press, including his colleagues in the editorial department, has great respect for him. I highly recommend him to any future employer. Steven is an excellent editor. His clear guidelines facilitate the writing process without stripping the writer of expressive freedom. At the same time, he left all of my pieces more concise and compelling than he found them--and always seemed more like an ally than a supervisor--so I thank him for that!
