Our team researches mechanisms that give rise to antibiotic resistance and is developing new solutions to combat these. Of particular relevance is understanding multi-drug efflux pumps that are responsible for extruding antibiotics from bacteria, thereby rendering them ineffective. We are researching small molecules that target these efflux pumps and inhibit their action, thus reversing antibiotic resistance. Gram negative bacteria that are highly resistant to many classes of clinically important antibiotics are a major focus of our group. Show less

I was Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide – a position I held continuously from 2001 - 2019 due to continuous grant funding success over this time. I was a leader in an antibiotic drug discovery project was supported by two NHMRC Project grants and an NHMRC Development grant. Here my primary responsibilities included project management and maintaining relationships with key collaborators, attracting research funding and pursuing commercialisation of the technology. I successfully attracted over $3 million in research funding including from industry-linked schemes, published >50 original papers in highly-ranked, peer reviewed scientific journals and was a co-inventor on five patent applications. I played a pivotal role in managing a multidisciplinary collaboration involving national and international researchers. My training across these areas provided me with a broad set of transferable skills such as project management, preparation of reports, analysis of data, delivering presentations, management of intellectual property and industry and public engagement. Importantly, I also provided high quality training and mentorship to undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have overseen successful completion of 30+ PhD, Masters and Honours students. My students have received various awards, including a Rhodes Scholarship, Humbolt Fellowship and NHMRC Fellowship. I was course co-ordinator for a Masters in Biotechnology elective. I demonstrated myself to be an excellent educator, with student evaluations consistently demonstrating above University average performance. Show less
