Working with Steven was a pleasure, he was able to ideate and create some exceptional designs in his time at Octopus. It's rare to work with a designer who is as inquisitive and hard working as Steven. No task seemed too large for Steven and he is adept at keeping up to date with cutting edge front-end design styles, concepts and philosophies. I hope our paths cross again soon.

I had the opportunity to work with Steve at Octopus Deploy and I can confidently say that he is a master at merging the design and engineering mindset to create high-quality product. Steve is truly passionate about design and product, and it has been a pleasure sharing his enthusiasm for finding opportunities, exploring ideas, and refining the solution. More importantly, he's an authentic and understanding team member who always goes above and beyond to make his colleagues feel included and recognized. He's a committed and skilled professional, and is a total asset to any team!

This role at Octopus Deploy is a hybrid between design and development focusing on frontend user experience. My main responsibilities are helping to maintain and enhance the internal design system and working on frontend accessibility, usability and user experience. To do so, I've needed to delve into a mix of technologies focusing on react, typescript, sass, less, npm, lamba, kubernetes, docker as well as some design tools such as figma, lookback, amplitutde, maze and more. As a part of the later half of my role I worked exclusively on Octopus Design System. A couple of the tasks I achieved were: - adding accessibility compliance to new components - establishing new navigation componentry - establishing our design tokens system and our initial tokens for our components - creating a WCAG AA colour matrix and a documentation for each of the above.

In this role I took more of a full stack approach to development. Throughout this role I looked at working more across the backend and frontend looking to implement features from the end to end cycle. During this time I worked across a majority of projects including:- Global search redesign- Brand System- Font upload and storage- Version history & CSS version controlEach of these projects required my to write Ruby on Rails, React, Redux and work with postgresql. During this time I worked on the UX of the application as well fixing usability bugs and consistent data bugs.

    • Front-end Developer / Product Designer
      • Sep 2020 - Mar 2021

In this role, I joined the Product team as a Fullstack Developer & Product Designer. As a part of this team, my role was to help deliver core features of our enterprise product, contribute to the frontend stack of our products and deliver high quality POCs to prove and disprove functional features. During this role I got to experience the best of both worlds and I delved deep into a variety of UX techniques focusing on user research, mock-designs and independent research as well as learning to create easy-to-use solutions to complex problems. There was a steep transition curve with this role and I had to learn a lot on my feet, making it perfect as a fast-paced learning role. For the role I upskilled in the following:- React, Redux, Version Control with Git, Webpack, Ruby on Rails, Postgresql.- Design system (chakra, storybook)- Figma, Miro, Framer & Notion- Jira, Confluence & Trello- Shape Up, Agile w/ Lean UX & Sprint Scrum methods

For a brief stint of 6 weeks I was able to take over the mantle of Quality Assurance in the Delivery of our product for Customer Experience. The role included designing a new QA system, sourcing tools and looking at visual designs and functional template code to make sure what we were handing to clients was high grade. The job mainly involved manual testing but my goal was to use percy, diff-tool and jest to create more automated testing for our Template codebase.

    • Template Developer / UI Designer
      • Jul 2019 - Sep 2020

As a template developer on the Customer Experience Team I work interdependently with a team consisting of development, marketing, sales, customer success and product design. In my role, I use and work on the SaSS platform to design products, working heavily with html, CSS, JavaScript, Markdown/Docz, UI/UX and layout design. My role has challenged me to learn the most effective way to write clean code and moved my design degree to the next level, giving me the opportunity to create unique motion designs for the company. I'm excited by this opportunity to learn and I am extremely happy with my career trajectory from this point.
