Having been a keen holidaying sailor, I decided to take some time away from actuarial work to get my RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification, training at the Hamble School of Yachting. I had a great time and finished the year sailing across the Atlantic, from Gran Canaria to St Lucia, as part of the ARC rally. I joined Markel International when I decided to move from pensions consultancy to non-life insurance actuarial work. My roles covered reserving analysis and presentations for a wide range of Markel's London market business, both Syndicate and Company. I then moved into capital modelling with the advent of the ICA regime, developing Markel International's first capital model and future developments towards Solvency II.
