      • Jul 2019 - Present

I now work for Unilink in the business development team as a Probation Specialist and Systems Consultant. This is hybrid role where I manage to traverse the technical delivery of our software from discovery through to development and later live service working with people internal to our projects and those from various stakeholders. I perceive that positive, open relationships, developing trust and sound ethical principles are key tenets of how I work with people. I may work in sales but I am not the stereotypical 'salesman' quite the opposite ... although I can talk a good game. I chose to work for Unilink as I know the systems we develop intimately well, I have been part of that iterative journey improving the software over various iterations and ergo improving peoples lives. The company has some truly outstanding achievements under its belt and I am proud of the software we have delivered. The term innovation gets bandied about but innovate is something we have done from developing interoperable dashboards with tasks and workflow that transformed how probation operated, integration of an improved risk and need assessment tool into the case management to save countless hours of work, simplified processes for breach, recall and delivery of unpaid work, new work being pushed to the worker ... the list of innovations is endless. This makes my day job so much more straightforward. Following the prep, I really enjoy demonstrating our software and it feels so enthusing when I explain how our systems work and fellow Probation Officers eyes light up with glee (someone even cried once; lovely moment). We are industry leaders, with world class engineers in our midst and have delivered some truly innovative and awesome applications. I have added to that by synthesising my experiences and systemic understanding into an approach that allows me to work alongside colleagues to design systems that work fantastically well for practitioners, their teams and wider organisations. • Quality & Effective Practice Manager
      • Aug 2018 - Jun 2019

I formerly worked as senior probation officer and central manager in a quality and effective practice management role. This involves writing submissions for SLT based upon thematic inspections, academic findings or whole system improvements, receiving commissions for work and project management of high profile national projects in HMPPS. The role links to stakeholder engagement, communications, whole system improvement and knowledge management in supporting the NPS progress against its business plan and strategic drivers. With an overall aim of enabling probation to deliver practice which is recognised as high quality and effective. I take the lead on EPP communications, central use of our COTS IT applications, knowledge management, offender engagement (SEEDS2) and service user involvement. This was a key role in a central HMPPS team who take commissions from the Senior Leadership team in relation to learning from thematic inspections, service user improvements, CJS research, desistance theory and stakeholder engagement. I lead on developing our use of IT products, communications and social media so I work across our portfolio of products to improve effectiveness and quality across all areas of work. This involves engaging our stakeholders through internal and external communications, developing our social media presence on appropriate platforms. I hold a positive and influencing leadership style in a central role that involves effective communication and work with senior operational leaders in HMMPS and professionals across the sector. I take the lead on different national projects and communications across our team. The projects differ in scope and scale so an appreciation of different project management styles helps to ensure the projects are undertaken in line with principles of lean six sigma and the requisite agility. In 2017 I had the opportunity to gain the qualification that I treasure most by gaining my Diploma in Social Work on the Think Ahead Programme at the University of York. From the day that I was first interviewed as part of the fostering process when my parents decided to foster I wanted to be a social worker. Throughout my schooling that was always my plan, get my undergraduate and then apply to social work however at 21 I had the chance to train as a Probation Officer and I never looked back until I was made redundant following governmental changes. I realise now that my core beliefs were activated by the career change and sought the opportunity to qualify as a Social Worker. I spent an intensive 14 months studying on the course whilst working in a Psychosis Team in County Durham. I learnt so much on that course about mental health, how people experience different conditions and my own self. Suffice to say I am a better person for the experience and very thankful for all those that helped me along the way. Show less

    • Business Analyst
      • Jan 2014 - Aug 2018

I worked for the software development company Beaumont Colson Ltd (BCL) in a training consultancy role on leaving the Probation Service after 15 years. I developed with the role into our Senior Business Analyst operating in an agile delivery team working alongside clients in developing bespoke Probation Case Management Systems. BCL were adept in traditional waterfall approaches and during my time in role we began to shift to iterative, incremental, and lean approaches to streamline and accelerate the delivery of our projects. This agile approach really suited my natural style and I was able to work with clients in a positive, collaborative way. Our method involved both technical and business experts undertaking the discovery work and conducting the user research with clients. A grounding in social research methods from my first degree and the subject matter expertise gained from 15 years in Probation gave me the skills and knowledge to gain deep insights, systemic understanding across the different roles and specialisms in Probation. I found I was uniquely able to translate what users wanted into user stories, mapping the user journeys and flagging the pain points they experienced. The ability to systemically understand how different users would interact within a new system design and how the roles dovetail with one another led to some astounding new innovations. I worked across various UK projects including the HMPPS national probation system N-Delius, the Daisy2 system operating in the Channel Islands and finally the CRC Delius product named Omnia in London & Thames Valley. I was most proud of my work on CRC Delius as it had real pedigree of proven products with almost every aspect improved and redeveloped into a system transformed probation practice in London & Thames Valley. Integrated into the case management services was a newly designed Risk & Needs tool (OASys Replacement) and the interoplable dashboards, tasks & workflow connected the whole probation team.
