  Brick mason laborers primarily lay bricks, using a cement-like substance called mortar to space the bricks. These workers will often mix the mortar, which, along with cement, contains sand, lime and water. In addition to working on the outside of buildings and structures, brick mason laborers also install brick walls inside offices and homes. They also build fireplaces and hearths in houses. Brick mason laborers must have a strong work ethic as well as basic math skills. Brick masons must be particularly skilled in algebra, geometry and mechanical drawing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. These professionals must also have skills in measuring things and mixing volumes of liquids and solids. Additionally, brick mason laborers need to be physically fit to handle the rigors of the job.
