• Professor of Medicine (Geriatric Medicine and Sleep Medicine)

  I co-direct geriatric clinical operations for the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology within UW Health and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. I was the Program Director for the ACGME-accredited Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program from 1997 to 2019. I now serve as the associate program director and oversee inter-professional geriatrics training for medical students, residents, fellows and multiple associate health trainees (nursing, pharmacy, social work, psychology. speech and language pathology) within the Division and the Madison VA GRECC. In the VA, I oversee the development and implementation of a number of clinical demonstration projects and direct 3 geriatric programs at the William S. Middleton VA Hospital. I maintain a geriatric specialty practice, a home-based primary care practice and an adult/older adult sleep medicine practice. I speak regionally and nationally on topics in sleep changes in aging/dementia, telemedicine use in geriatrics, competency-based education practices, and geriatric workforce development.

  Direct and develop operations and promote academic excellence in the three missions of Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Centers: To build new knowledge in geriatric care through research. To improve health care for older Veterans by developing innovative clinical models of care. To provide training and education on best practices in caring for older adults for students in healthcare disciplines and VA staff. As national centers of geriatrics excellence within VAs, the GRECC Network holds amazing promise for ground-breaking collaborative research and can leverage the collective expertise of some of the leading experts in Geriatrics/Aging to enhance care for all aging Veterans and all aging Americans. In my role as GRECC Director, I am committed to investing in and empowering GRECC scientists, clinicians and educators so that they can advance the field of Geriatrics and Geroscience. Furthermore, I am dedicated to promoting the US Department of Veterans Affairs as one of the largest health care systems in the U.S., and as a leader in health care innovation, safety and quality.

  As a Councilor of the Association Specialty Professors and incoming President, I represent the interests of fellowship program directors, division chiefs and physician faculty involved in an accredited internal medicine subspecialty fellowship program or its division. Leaders from all of the medicine subspecialty programs work together on common issues and opportunities that face the field of academic medicine. It is through this community of broad-reaching expertise that we can leverage a collective voice for change and improvements within organized internal medicine.
