After three decades working on International Issues I have now taken a job in the UK sector for the first time. (It is not easy to make the switch). I manage teams of community workers who support rural development programmes in East and West Sussex. Our newest programme is supporting communities to protect, enhance and care for their local woods. Other programmes have supported villages during covid and the new wave of Community Support Volunteers. It is quite a change to be no longer working on Africa, Asia and Latin America. But I travel to beautiful villages all over Sussex. And occasionally plant trees or walk in the woods. Just now looking at my Linked-In profile I realise that 90% of my 'contacts' work in international work. Please don't give me the cold shoulder now! Show less

Tax is now seen as central to African development. I worked at the International Centre for Tax & Development, at IDS, University of Sussex. The ICTD network of researchers across Africa are looking at ways to reduce tax evasion & avoidance, and make taxation fairer for the poor. Fairer & more transparent taxation will boost resources available for Schools, Health posts and other development programmes, & also contribute to democracy, equity & good governance. Strategic management of the PGL Sister-City relationship. Leading two main programmes, the first is support to local urban and rural NGOs and community development projects. (grants dispursement, M&E, technical support etc). The second is 'Cultural Interchange' - building links between schools, arts centres, universities etc in Pennsylvania with their counterparts in Leon department, Nicaragua. Since April 2018 Nicaragua has been engulfed in violent social upheaval. Most foreigners left the country and some INGOs closed. Local NGOs have been badly hit by budget cuts and/or repression. I have led the rapid development of a new emergency programme to support 8 local education NGOs. I will leave the PGL role in October 2018 to return to work in the UK, due to ill-health of a family member in the UK. Show less

At RESULTS UK, an Advocacy and Campaigns focussed development NGO, our mission is to contribute to creating the political will to finally end the worst forms of global poverty. I lead a large team of nine health advocates working to improve policy and resourcing on issues such as tuberculosis, immunisation, child survival and nutrition. Our main areas of focus at present are UK parliament and the EC institutions. We have some capacity to lobby the World Bank in collaboration with allies in other countries. Other teams work on global education and some work on employment and jobs. RESULTS has a network of campaign groups in the UK who lobby their MPs and MEPs. RESULTS UK joins with other RESULTS in the USA, Canada, Japan, Mexico and Australia to influence global institutions such as the UN. We are part of the ACTION Global Health Advocacy Partnership and work closely with those partners as well as other allies in France, India, Zambia, Kenya and elsewhere. Show less
