Shot series of b&w hair ads for Nubest & Co. with an original supermodel, Janice Dickinson that appeared in American Vogue in 1981 and '82. International fashion magazines and covers followed move to Paris, in late '82. Flying in from Paris, shooting editorial fashion in London, for British Vogue during '83 and '84 was a goal achieved and high point. Having a keen eye for talent, I cast and photographed Cindy Crawford's first cover and also shot early editorials and covers of Linda Evangelista. I was known for beautiful lighting, and having a timeless, classic aesthetic, of always making the girls look great. British Vogue, W, Grazia, Cosmopolitan are a few of the international fashion magazines worked for. Show more Show less

Estimated, budgeted, negotiated & secured contracts, scheduled, permitted locations, coordinated travel, catering, etc.Clients included; Jeep, IBM, Royal Alliance, Toyota, Levi's, Whirlpool. One afternoon, one of our clients, a demanding German photographer had come into town to begin a very ambitious location job, asked if I could meet with him for a drink at the bar at Grand Central Station. During our meeting, he asked if I would be willing to produce his week long shoot. I reminded him that one of the partners had already been designated as his producer for this job, and although I'd be happy to work in support, I had no power to change things around and did not want to ruffle any feathers with my bosses. I only worked there, I didn't call the shots. He told me he couldn't stand working with that person, and I knew from back at the office, they felt the same way about him. In fact both partners were intimidated by this photographer but didn't want to lose his business. I somehow had the ability to relate to him in a non-threatining fashion. He found out that I was also an accomplished photographer, and I think also respected my honesty. The next morning, when I arrived at work, both of my bosses were amazed. The German photographer had already requested the switch for me to take over his job. They may have known he was ready to pull the job and go elsewhere, and relieved that they didn't have to personally be on location with him. I had a good time working with him and all my different clients I produced for. You learn something from everyone. Show more Show less

I began doing freelance fashion photographic assignments for Women's Wear Daily and W in New York City in early April 1980. Bonnie Fuller would also come over to Paris and we'd shoot young women in the street fashion for WWD.For Fairchild I initiated and pioneered the shooting of beauty photography backstage at the fashion shows. Up till that point they used illustration, apparently not wanting to risk photography. I pitched my show proposal in Paris. We got a front page cover of WWD in color. This was rare in 1982. It became a hit, and followed for many seasons. One day I brought some hot lights to Karl Lagerfeld's house, as I set up, he teased me, "This guy thinks he's Helmut Newton?" Then one day backstage at Chanel, Karl approached and complimented me saying, "I loved your beauty portraits!" I was stunned, him taking the time minutes before his show started, to give me the compliment. At a show in Paris, I felt a tap on my shoulder, it was John Fairchild. He had a special backstage assignment for me, to concentrate on Yves personally as he worked his clothes on his girls. It turned out a success! An earlier incident with Mr. Fairchild, was more nerve-racking. He was waiting for me upstairs at Kenzo, but we'd arrived on our own, and the receptionist would not disturb them, even though they were waiting for me with a model dressed for me to shoot. Apparently they weren't to be disturbed. After about 3 or 4 attempts of me practically begging, they finally called down. Asking an annoyed Mr. Fairchild, on his way out, for any direction. He replied, "You figure it out, you're supposed to be so brilliant, and don't give me any of that beautiful lighting crap either."Once outside, sans light meter, left backstage with the lighting gear, it was do or die...
