As a maritime auditor, inspector, investigator and trainer, I visit ports, yards, dry-dock locations and sail with the Crew whenever possible. My job is not just to work with shore-based and offshore personnel to reduce HS&E related incidents, but also to ensure Company-compliance with International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Conventions such as Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and Maritime Prevention of Pollution (MARPOL). I also carry out specific audits to aid compliance with regulations such as the International Safety Management (ISM), International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS), Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) and Health & Safety Executive (HSE

This was a client-facing and field role in which I orchestrated the safe development and delivery of large CapEx projects involving oil & gas, construction, mining, geotechnical investigation, both on and offshore, as the HS&E Specialist and Construction Safety Officer (CSO). I regularly conducted audits and inspections throughout British Columbia, working with indigenous people, company and client specialists. Through ownership of safe work procedures and when joining teams in the field, I drove many safety initiatives, but namely, CoSHH, Asbestos, Trenching, Light, Noise, Crane, Ergonomic and Fatigue Management. I was also lead HS&E incident investigator.

This involved the administration of the safety management system for over 1700 personnel ashore and afloat throughout the entire New Zealand Navy and the Reservists. I audited vessels, establishments, training facilities and activities. I conducted accident investigations, wrote safe operating procedures, developed permit to work systems, conducted ergonomic assessments and carried out noise, light & air sampling. When ships were in maintenance, I would run drills and conduct audits and inspections. Through the development and delivery of around 12 individual courses, up to three-days in length, I was able to encourage a large number ‘Safety Champions’, who were instrumental in incident reduction.

As POC to around 20 aerospace companies I grew the port folio from approximately US$3M to US$8M. I developed both legacy and new business throughout Europe, taking bespoke designs from concept to production to aftersales support. Companies I worked with included BAe, Airbus, GE, Westland and Eurocopter. Working closely with engineers I was instrumental in taking US parts through a process to comply with British or European standards and which significantly advanced technical boundaries. Engineering Manager and Bomb Disposal Officer
-
Mar 1981 - Jun 2005
As a manager in the UK Air Force I achieved accreditation by the Institute of Leadership and Management which assessed teacher training, technical writing, presentations and managerial assessment. I was also a certified health and safety and quality auditor (ISO 9001:2000). I managed teams all over the world. As a licensed Bomb Disposal Officer (BDO) I worked closely with police and security services as part of Military Aid to Civilian Policing (MACP). In emergency situations I would be required to take charge of and direct the emergency services in order to protect the public and return the scene to normal. At the time I left the military, I was running three disposal teams in Gibraltar. As a technical manager and as a BDO I was responsible for the quantity and quality of work carried out, and for the wellbeing and safety of the team. I would develop safe systems of work at each site, often with limited resources, which not only complied with local legislation but provided a synergy with operational requirements.
