Stephen Sum worked for the City Of Sydney Council from 31st March 2017 until 22nd December 2018 as a Field Surveyor on the ‘City Of Sydney Floor Space and Employment Survey’. The Survey involved visiting buildings across the Sydney Local Government Area, collecting information about the business establishments (Tenancy, Employment numbers, Furniture Plans) and visiting each floor to complete a mapping of floor space usage. This data is collected using an IPad with a specifically designed application that dovetails in with GIS software. The survey is a major research project, the first of its kind when commenced in 1976 and is regarded as one of the most detailed 3D mapping projects in the world. With over 500,000 spatial data units and involving in excess of 26,000 businesses, the results inform the ongoing strategic planning of the Council as well as State and Commonwealth departments. At all times we found Stephen to be reliable, hard-working, precise and honest. His commitment to the project and consistent ability to collecting accurate data in an efficient and timely manner exceeded our performance standards. Stephen ’s skills made him an asset to the project and the City Of Sydney. We would not hesitate to recommend him to future employers.

Stephen Sum completed a 100-hour internship with Macquarie University Sustainability in 2015. Stephen worked on research and development projects for our Permaculture Demonstration Garden, including the scoping and documentation of the following: o Crop rotation schedule. Stephen mapped out a garden-bed planting schedule over five years that rotated crops to maximise soil health and diversity. His planting schedules were thorough and included companion planting guilds and maintenance notes. o Aquaculture pond project planning. Stephen produced a project plan for the implementation of an aquaculture pond on campus. His plan included scoping the location, design, materials, plants, livestock, budget and timeline. His plan in now being implemented. o Permaculture Demonstration Garden website content. Stephen researched all the design elements included in the garden and synthesised the information into educational content for our website. We found Stephen to be prompt and reliable in his work. Stephen worked well autonomously, and fit in easily with the team. We very much enjoyed having him as part of the team, and would work with him again in a heart beat. We wish Stephen all the best with his future endeavours, and greatly appreciate his time with us.
