I have recently completed a work of historical fiction, based on my professional experiences over the last four decades. At the intersection of the sacred and the profane, Act of Faith dissects the Vatican’s complicity in America’s largest criminal conspiracy perpetrated against children and their families. Through the rich pallet of three generations of Italian immigrant family members, Act of Faithchronicles the devastating personal and societal impacts when religious leaders hide sexual predators in plain sight. The last half of the 20th century frames the unrelenting effort by the Catholic hierarchy to use any means available to shroud the horrors of clergy sexual abuse from mainstream exposure, leaving the survivors to fend for themselves. Set in the quiet enclave of “Little Rome” of Washington, DC’s northeast quadrant, during the years between 1960 and 1994, this sprawling family saga is layered in three parts, Genesis, Revelation and Deliverance. Each part reveals the lives, foibles, tragedies, conspiracies and yes some laugh at loud moments that created the nuanced alchemy of the crisis that has devastated families and shaken the Catholic Church world-wide.
