  For my work placement I was employed as an intern at the Software Research Institute (SRI) in Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT), starting on 04/06/2013. I was reporting to Dr. Enda Fallon. My duties were to carry out research as required and develop Android prototypes. In particular I looked at applying Fuzzy Logic as a means to model user preferences. The first project I carried out was to develop an Android app for recommending houses that users might be interested in buying. The app downloaded a set of houses from a REST service. The app would then ask the user their preferences and recommend houses based on those preferences. The second app was similar, but it would ask the user for their preferences concerning activities at a festival. Again it would make recommendations based on these preferences. Finally, towards the end of my work placement I was sub-contracted to work at the company DeviceSmart. The company develops and supports software based control and monitoring technology. I gained good experience working in a group with tasks assigned to each employee. My work placement officially ended on 21/01/2014.
