This is an ambitious project to bring together data from across Markel International from a wide variety of sources for both Retail and Wholesale Insurance. These sources involve both off the shelf systems (Eclipse Underwriting in the case of wholesale insurance) and bespoke internal, off the shelf and boutique in the case of the Retail system. In addition, complex data migrations away from the bespoke system to individual systems was / is being carried out during the course of the project. The integration and Ingest of the data from the new systems is being achieved through a common message architecture. Messages are received, validated for structure and stored on our Hadoop platform in Apache Avro format for onwards processing of financial data and load into our bi-temporal warehouse. This work has involved rapid adaptability to new technology (Hadoop, Hive and related tech, JAVA and Python) as well as innovation and delivery focus. I was required to present the prototype solution to a number of the Markel International board. The aim of the project is to provide a consistent, verified (one source of the truth) view of Markel International's insurance data for use by Actuaries for their reserving process, analytics, auditing (Sarbanes Oxley) and ultimately self-service reporting. The data is automatically reconciled as part of the load process.I have taken a variety of roles on the project from in depth data analysis, tech design, data architecture and solution design, right through to code development and deployment, setup and support of a continuous integration environment, release planning and day to day support of testers and liaison with third party suppliers. Throughout the life of the project we have used a wide variety of resources from onshore / offshore developers and testers and senior permanent and contract staff.

Employed as part of the Core delivery team who administer the BI environments such as Business Objects 4.1 and Qlikview 11.2, and provide support and development of ETL and related solutions to the business. The BI environment is varied with both Oracle (9i) and SQL Server both in use, SQL Server being the strategic database going forward. The primary ETL tool we use is Informatica (10.1) for data load and transformation.During my time in this role i have planned and upgraded business objects from version XI2 through 3.1 to our current platform of 4.1. Primarily i provide day to day support to the business on a rota basis and development of new BI solutions. Our current focus on this front is a bi-temporal data warehouse, which i have been heavily involved in building for the past year and a half. I have worked particularly closely with the Actuarial team and have deliver a number of enhancements, new solutions and performance improvements to the applications which support their reserving process. I particularly enjoy this work as it involves collaboration and autonomy in equal measure and i can see the benefits of my work as they're delivered.

I am Currently working on a claims data warehousing project and ECF2 reporting. I have been required to develop a process for producing a datamart to allow reporting of cycle times for claims transactions in order to give enhanced reporting to the Lloyd's insurance Market. This has involved multiple DBMS (DB2 / Oracle (PL/SQL) / SQL Server 2005 t-sql / Access, Business Objects (Universe Designer / Desktop Intelligence), in depth systems analysis, data analysis and profiling, a high level of business knowledge, and strong SQL / tuning skills.I have written the majority (80-90%) of the ETL for the core warehouse in PL/SQL including Lloyd's Market Financial reconciliation and cross market cycle time metrics data marts. The Data warehouse went live in early September and is now delivering reports to many Brokers and Carriers across the London Insurance Market.I have worked closely with the data warehouse Architect on the data model and ensuring that the end to end process is robust and production ready.
