For more than 25 years, the Long Tom Watershed Council’s staff of scientists, biologists, and landscape experts have worked to build a culture of neighbors helping neighbors to do the right thing for land and water from the Coast Range to the Willamette River. I have the pleasure of helping to share the stories of their and our volunteers’ accomplishments and helping to widen the circle of engagement to improve the health of this community’s water and land. As a fundraising and management consultant since 2015, I have helped a variety of local and national nonprofits to create and meet their fundraising and community engagement goals. I have collaborated with wealthy Silicon Valley philanthropists to leverage funding support for a national nonprofit in California focused on education, led an ad hoc fundraising efforts that raised hundreds of thousands for nonviolent activists facing prison, and helped generate foundation funding for an array of local and state environmental and social justice nonprofits in Oregon. People of Faith Against the Death Penalty is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate and mobilize faith communities to act to abolish the death penalty in the United States. Beginning with a small, local base, PFADP's staff drove the grassroots effort that led to North Carolina stopping executions since 2006. We raised millions despite a largely arid fundraising environment, and provided creative community organizing and programming that mobilized tens of thousands of people around the United States, drawing unprecedented media attention and changing state policies to reduce the scope and impact of the death penalty and foster restorative justice. NC/RCAP was a nonprofit that worked to ensure affordable access to safe drinking water and sanitary waste disposal for all North Carolinians. During my five years at NC/RCAP we expanded the staff from two to 14, and we raised $25 million in funding for essential water, sewer, and solid waste infrastructure for some of the most underserved rural communities in the South. We provided community organizing and technical assistance to address decades of water infrastructure needs in low-wealth communities. I also wrote a book published by NC/RCAP with funding from the NC General Assembly called "Considering the Alternatives: A Guide to Wastewater Management for Small Communities in North Carolina," which was distributed to thousands of local officials and community organizers. Our work was featured in national and statewide media and led to policy changes addressing the inequities in rural infrastructure. NC/RCAP continued in operation well into the 2000s, and its programs continue as part of a regional nonprofit. Show less
