In this position, I helped to restart the adult English language program at Community Learning Center. This has involved designing and piloting curricula, establishing partnerships with organizations that hosted our classes, maintaining partnerships with those organizations, and recruiting learners. I helped grow this program from one small class to one serving about sixty adults per year. I have taught a multi-level US citizenship class, a high beginner English class, a high intermediate English class, and an advanced English class for college-bound individuals. The advanced English class was the first of its kind among PA state-funded agencies in Philadelphia. At CLC, I have also taught workforce readiness and GED classes, in addition to registering and assessing adults who are seeking educational opportunities. In the workforce readiness class, I helped adults increase their math skills so that they could qualify for job training programs. In the GED class, I worked with adults studying to take their GED (high school equivalency) exams. This included teaching reading comprehension, writing, and math, as well as science and social studies. Show less

    • Development Coordinator
      • Jul 2009 - Mar 2014

As the development coordinator, I research funding opportunities and write grant proposals in collaboration with our executive director. I take primary responsibility for drafting and providing final proofreading of grant proposals, in addition to vetting new funding opportunities and managing due dates. I also create and publish newsletters and annual reports, implement social media and email outreach, manage the website, and help the board of directors coordinate fundraising campaigns and fundraising events. In my tenure as development coordinator, I have played an integral role in helping Community Learning Center double its yearly foundation income and increase its yearly individual donation income by about 104%. I provided essential support to CLC's board of directors in planning and executing CLC's 25th Anniversary celebration fundraiser, which resulted in more than double a return on the amount spent to put on the event. I also initiated and implemented CLC's effort to increase its web presence by creating and maintaining a Facebook page, a Twitter account, and an email marketing strategy. Show less

      • Aug 2008 - Jun 2009

I taught writing to low-income students in 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. I designed and implemented curricula focusing on the major purposes of writing, composition, grammar, and mechanics, linking instruction to students' experience and current events. In addition to lesson planning, managing a classroom, and providing direct writing instruction, I also communicated regularly with parents and caregivers about their children's progress. As the sixth grade homeroom teacher, I also spent two periods each day with the sixth graders reinforcing reading comprehension strategies and math skills they were learning in reading and math class, in addition to compiling grades and creating report cards for each sixth grader each marking period. I also helped organize a field trip for the sixth and seventh grade classes and served as a chaperone for the annual eighth grade field trip to Washington, DC. Show less
