In this role I developed new methods to characterise localised corrosion events using HS-AFM as part of a unique suite of analytical techniques. This work enhanced understanding of the mechanisms of localised corrosion with new confidence by identifying key factors contributing to corrosion propensity.

My PhD research focussed on the application of high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) to observe nanoscale corrosion initiation events. In particular, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) initiation occurring in austenitic stainless steels, whilst under stress and within corrosive conditions. This work successfully explored the nanoscale mechanisms that give rise to localised corrosion events such as SCC and demonstrated the versatility and suitability of HS-AFM within materials science and corrosion studies.
