This is written in reference to Dr. Staci Padove Cohen. Along with Dr. Julia Kubanek, I served as co-advisor for Dr. Cohen during her graduate work leading to the PhD. Although both Dr. Kubanek and I served in this role, Dr. Cohen spent the vast majority of her time in my lab environment. Dr. Cohen was a phenomenal graduate student. She took on a highly risky project, and did a stellar job with it; she was rewarded in the end with a "first-ever", since she identified the first co-receptor involved in chemical signaling that plays a role in chemical ecology. This required the application of a great many different approaches, including electrophysiology and lots of molecular and cellular biology approaches. Through this effort, Dr. Cohen showed that she is capable of tackling difficult projects, and overcoming huge odds to see the project through. I am pleased to give her a very strong recommendation.

As an intern for the JCI, Staci edited manuscript abstracts and titles as well as writing press releases for JCI articles. I found that Staci has an excellent eye for detail, and her edits generally improved the flow and readability of the abstracts. In addition, her press releases were well-written, succinct, and accessible to a broad audience. I've enjoyed having Staci as part of the JCI intern program
