I worked with Spencer at Microsoft where he managed end-to-end onboarding of engineering teams to the Microsoft Email Orchestrator (MEO) transactional email platform as Technical Product Manager. Throughout our team's migration of M365 Identity Management (IDM) and Lockbox emails from the Office 365 SMTP provider to MEO, Spencer demonstrated a keen leadership capacity. He organized and led surveys and interviews of Microsoft engineers worldwide, resulting in improvements to the MEO process, systems and onboarding experience that stood the test of time. His customer-driven enhancements have been in-use by the MEO team 2 years later and counting! Spencer’s drive for betterment is imbued with self-awareness and maturity in that he’s willing to be vulnerable, acknowledging that he needs the perspectives of others to optimize results. For each of the at least 20 Service Auth team’s IDM and Lockbox email template submissions, Spencer made himself available to discuss in-depth and offer clarity when, for example, I endeavored to map complex XSL logic to the proprietary MEO typing, conditionals and looping logic of their template definitions. He helped expedite template creation for our team during our time of need, and streamlined communication when our Suzhou, China counterparts who owned the Lockbox email system were required to ramp-up to the migration quickly. I had the great privilege to experience his unique brand of attention to detail, prompt communication, mentorship, chivalry and customer empathy during those 1:1s and also in MEO office hours. Spencer diligently attended to and resolved engineer queries on all aspects of MEO and beyond from the nuances of the MEO RESTful APIs and test validation methodology to the individual email requirements of the more than 150 of Microsoft’s diverse and global team demographic spanning products within Azure, M365 Security and Compliance, Commerce and more. He stands out in his innate ability to empower others and his organization to achieve more! I highly recommend Spencer for Technical Product Management Leadership roles given his proven record of being effective during times of increasing VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) and rapid change. Spencer demonstrates a kind of servant leadership that is much needed in the software industry in my opinion; a brand of leadership for which, I observed, exceeded expectations when compared to the leadership styles of the many engineering managers I worked with because he fostered leadership within all of those engineers which he served, with utmost care. If I may borrow from a leader, 5 stars. 10/10. Thumbs up!
