Within the Community and Primary Care Research Group (CPCRG), I am currently working on a Medical Research Council (MRC) funded social prescribing project with Dr Kerryn Husk. In collaboration with SIPHER, we will be creating a systems map and looking at routes for referral outside of the formal NHS structures. I am also research assistant for the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Weight Management Research Project. We will be sharing a link to an online survey, via social media and inviting respondents to take part in an in-depth interview. We are interested in finding out how NHS services can best support overweight and obese residents of Cornwall to lose weight. Previously, I assisted Dr. Cath Quinn and Dr. Julie Evans on the National Institute of Health Research funded project: Public Health; Plymouth Priorities, within the Community and Primary Care Research Group. This project is an opportunity to inform and challenge the local, regional and national research agenda for Public Health Research. Using a Realist Evaluation informed approach to develop a co-created plan between Plymouth Local Authority and University, which meets local priorities for health and wellbeing and informs national research development. I contributed to literature reviews, developing the search strategy, conducting searches and summarising the findings. I carried out Realist interviews, approaching people to ask them to be interviewed and providing them with information, constructing interview topic guides, conducting and recording virtual interviews and identifying and summarising the key points of the interviews to contribute to the project theory development. I combined literature search results and interview data in the two realist informed case studies which I lead. I contributed to writing up the project findings in a report and will provide input for an academic journal article. Show less

I helped to design an active travel to and for work survey, which was disseminated via survey monkey. I then analysed and wrote a report with the data collected, making some suggestions as to how they could facilitate and empower staff to chose more environmentally friendly and healthier or more active means of travel. I again assisted Dr. William Lee, on the fourth and fifth staffing survey of Liaison Psychiatry in England (LPSE-5), funded by NHS England and the Liaison Faculty at The Royal College of Psychiatry. We published the report of the fourth survey of liaison psychiatry in England (https://www.england.nhs.uk/publication/report-of-the-4th-survey-of-liaison-psychiatry-in-england/). The fifth survey was also completed with a 100% response. We presented the data at the Liaison Trainees, New Consultants, Nurses and Allied Health Professional Annual Conference 'Together, Mind and Body' and subsequently the report has been written up, but publishing has been delayed by the current health crisis. I contributed to the mixed methods questionnaire survey design, carried out contact auditing, collected and recorded data in a spreadsheet, cleaned data, coded and assisted in analysis of the data and wrote the report in collaboration with Dr. Lee. I also respond to data requests from clinicians. During lockdown, I assisted a redeployed team in analysing and writing up the DPT staff survey on the COVID-19 response. Subsequently I also analysed and wrote a report on the DPT patient and carer’s experience during the first COVID-19 lockdown survey. Show less

      • Sep 2018 - Feb 2019

In collaboration with an academic partner, I carried out an independent project evaluation of a Plymouth City Council project to address health inequalities in some of the most deprived communities in Plymouth. The Active Neighbourhoods project aims were to engage people in their local nature reserve; improving social, physical and emotional well-being and empowering people to influence the development of their local environment. On analysis of the data collected and in the form of a written report, I identified the successes of the project, and areas for development and future project bids. Show less

I secured a one hundred percent response rate to a large scale survey of Liaison Psychiatry in England, funded by NHS England and the Liaison Faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatry. Despite austerity there has been an increase in funding for liaison psychiatry and targets set to improve the service nationwide. This survey is well received among liaison psychiatry teams as it tracks national service changes and influences policy decisions at this critical time of service development. While working on this project I learnt about the complexities of the NHS and mental health services. I gathered the data via email and telephone from all the acute hospitals in England, using a mixed methods questionnaire, due to the complexity and diversity of services. I entered the data into a spreadsheet, ensuring all relevant services at the hospital had been captured and all the answers were answered accurately and thoroughly. Where necessary I followed up to make further enquiries and clarifications. This survey is crucial to ensure that the increased funding to liaison psychiatry services translates into increased services on the ground across the country. Analysis of the data is ongoing and a written report will be produced in the forth coming weeks. As a result of our collaborative success, Dr. William Lee, Reader in Psychiatric Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, was commissioned to lead the survey again the following year and I continued to work with him. I was responsible for monitoring output in the field, controlling the use of assets and finances and representing EFA in meetings and other forums. Show less

I conducted research into charcoal production and fuel wood collection in and around a refugee camp and its ‘host communities’. I succeeded in accessing and earning the trust of these different groups of vulnerable people in post-conflict Sierra Leone. My research was important to draw attention to the potential tensions between refugees and the subsistence farming host communities, and to identify pressure on natural resources in the area. A written report was produced.
