I worked with the Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS), in-person when I am home in North Carolina and virtually when at school in Maine. When in person, I most often work in their STEM lab, an interactive space where I lead demonstrations or activities for visitors. I also answer questions at different exhibits, help with after-school programs, and assist with museum operations tasks. Virtually, I develop educational material for parents and teachers, update exhibit statements, and manage AMOS social media. My social media responsibility has become one of my largest, as I am in charge of posting all social media content for the museum. I also create a large portion of this content, writing fun, accessible posts on a wide variety of topics (like Mineral Mondays or Fossil Fridays), but ones that are still educational. Show less

Using this fellowship, I am beginning my honors project on the indirect effects of the invasive green crab on the endangered and critical blue mussel in Southern Maine. This project focuses on how crab predation on mussels causes them to put energy into thickening their shells, but forces them to take energy away from other crucial aspects of defense, growth, and reproduction.

Worked with Professor Amy Johnson in her Marine Biology lab on sea star oscillatory locomotion. Professor Johnson discovered that in addition to their well documented crawling gait, sea stars also have a "bouncing" gait, where they coordinate the movement of their tube feet and bounce forward, giving them extra speed. This gait has now been observed and document in three sea star species, and the gait characterized in terms of form and velocity.

    • Residential Life Staff at Bowdoin College
      • Aug 2018 - May 2019

I worked as a First-Year Proctor for the 2018-2019 school year. First-year proctors live in first-year residence halls, and are the primary residential staff first years interact with and rely on. My main duties were to facilitate my floor’s integration into Bowdoin’s community, direct my Proctor’s to the resources available at Bowdoin, and provide any support for academic and personal issues that arose throughout the year.

I worked in the dining hall of the Assisted Living section of Deerfield. I helped to cook for, prep, serve, and clean up three meals a day for the same residents each day. This involved lots of teamwork and customer service. I particularly enjoyed getting to know the residents and chat with them throughout the day. As an intern for the Environmental Quality Institute (EQI) I evaluated the water quality of lakes, rivers, and streams in Buncombe and surrounding counties. EQI has a state certified lab with nine tests approved and conducted to assess water quality. I was responsible for running four of these tests on the majority of samples. I also conducted data entry and analysis. As an intern for the Environmental Quality Institute (EQI) I evaluated the water quality of lakes, rivers, and streams in Buncombe and surrounding counties.
