Sophie was a brilliant volunteer and took on lots of responsibility during her time supporting Southampton Hub (part of national charity Student Hubs). She was responsible for leading and delivering weekly debating clubs for Year 5 students, which required confidence, leadership, creativity and excellent strengths in communication. Following this and volunteering for Empower, Sophie took on the role of Empower Coordinator. This involved leading 32 volunteers in delivery of a mentoring programme at a local school, liaising with staff and developing new innovative ideas, such as the impact framework for beneficiaries which she launched. Sophie is a passionate volunteer, with strong skills in supporting young people with complex needs, communication, teamwork and leadership. I would be thrilled to work with Sophie again and she would make a fantastic addition to any team.

I worked as a teaching assistants for children with special needs in a mainstream primary school. In the mornings I worked with a group of year 3s and assist them in their English and maths lessons. This group of children are a combination of those with special needs and/or traumatic backgrounds that have left them to need more assistance with school. In the afternoons I worked 1:1 with a child in year 1 who is severely autistic and non-verbal. I created different activities to do with her which incorporate her PECs training and intensive interactions. Overall this job has developed my patience, resilience, communication skills, leadership skills, ability to work under pressure, organisation, time management, self-reflection and team working skills. I was the student leader responsible for delivering the Empower volunteer mentoring programme for Southampton Hub, in collaboration with their staff team. This project matched university students with year 9 students from a local school that have been struggling due to interpersonal and social problems. I recruited 32 volunteers through lecture shout-outs, social media groups, fresher events and handing out flyers. I delivered selection and training workshops to ensure that everyone was appropriate for the project and was trained to a good standard ready to start the project. I was in charge of liaising with stakeholders, including community partners to organise student placements; and was responsible for leading a team of 4 group coordinators to ensure the smooth running of the project. During my time in the project I successfully launched beneficiary feedback which was well received by Southampton Hub students, staff and beneficiaries in the charity. Overall in this work as coordinator I meet and exceeded the majority of the goals I had set out to do and evaluated ways in other options for the goals that were not quite meet, so they can be developed by the next coordinator. This work helped me to develop a range of different skills such as: assertiveness, leadership, team-work, communication skills through different formats such as group sessions and emails, self-awareness and self-reflection, organisation, problem-solving, dedication, perseverance, ability to work under pressure and my confidence.
