Boarding Coordinator
-
Jun 2018 - Feb 2022
As a Boarding Coordinator at the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS), I played a pivotal role in the educational journey of Indigenous students from remote and regional communities. MITS is a residential transition school where approximately 22 Year 7 students, spend a year before transitioning to scholarship positions at Melbourne partner schools. My focus was on student well-being, aligning with MITS's philosophy. In this role, I provided essential residential care, ensuring a smooth transition for students from their home communities to Melbourne schools. Creating a safe, inclusive, and culturally respectful community was a core responsibility, reflecting values such as respect, kindness, courage, and care. Beyond formal duties, I nurtured a culturally celebratory boarding environment, fostering mentorship and friendship, and building a sense of community among students. Establishing trust, understanding, and transparent communication with families, guardians, and Indigenous communities was fundamental. I consistently exhibited fairness and empathy toward students, especially those living away from home, understanding the duty of care involved. My deep respect for First Nations cultures and commitment to reconciliation were evident. I effectively collaborated with diverse groups, including adolescents, parents, and school staff, with qualifications in First Aid and CPR and proficiency in report writing and office administration. My commitment to student well-being included supervision, hygiene maintenance, homework support, and addressing behavior concerns in line with MITS's policy. Overall, my role at MITS was marked by unwavering support for Indigenous students, championing their well-being, cultural identity, and successful educational transition. Show less
