As a Psychosocial Support Worker (PSW) it's my role to co-ordinate support to young people who are living with cancer (aged 12-24). Part of my role is to raise awareness and promote canteen services so that young people living with cancer can be referred to CanTeen. This involves networking and liaising with referrers such as nurses, social workers school psychologists. When a young person is referred to CanTeen, an PSW meets with them and provide individual assistance based on their needs. This can involve things such as: a referral for counselling; engaging them in our peer support programs; linking them up with other young people living with cancer or liaising with their school. It is our aim to assist the young person to achieve optimal wellbeing and resilience throughout their cancer journey. On programs PSWs facilitate psychosocial sessions that aim to develop a "tool kit" of strategies to support the young people with their cancer experience and provide them with an opportunity to share their cancer journey in a safe space. I love working for CanTeen because I am passionate about supporting and empowering young people. I feel privileged to work for such a fantastic organisation which provides such important support for young people living with cancer. I work with a dynamic, enthusiastic and fun team and I love coming to work each day!

      • Jan 2010 - Mar 2012

As an academic mentor, it was my role to motivate and support students in year 10 and 11 to reach their full potential in English and Maths exams. I did intervention work with students on a one to one and in small groups. I facilitated and designed resources for a steps to success program which ran after school for 10 weeks leading up to the exams. In addition to this I also did a review of the school rewards system and implemented some new initiatives. I found the role rewarding and fulfilling.
