  I was awarded a paid internship with Designscape Architects to work on a charity building project that the company sponsor in Flores, Indonesia. My brief was to provide the design and building technology for a medical centre to serve this rural region. The focus for the technology became compressed earth block walls and bamboo roof trusses. In September ‘12 a colleague and I made the trip to Flores to assist with the build.   Working with local builders I assisted building projects being undertaken in the Tanga region of Tanzania supported by charity Village Africa. The kitchen building I took part in completes the Sambaa site, providing accommodation for teaching, building and health volunteers. I was also involved in the design of a 6-room house for translator John Shekwamba. Building work on this project began shortly after I left, and is now complete. The design forms the template for three houses for Village Africa employees. Past and ongoing work includes the building and renovation of classrooms, health posts, toilets, water tanks and staff accommodation. Show less
