I had the pleasure of being architectural supervisor for Sophie at the 2nd semester of the master at the Institute of Architecture & Design, Aalborg University. The 2nd semester of the architectural master education was a very demanding semester that focus on zero energy buildings and The Integrated Design Process, a detailed method to develop architecture that integrates both technical and aesthetic parameters. The subject for the semester was to design a building complex on the edge of the dense city that should reach a high density, zero energy according to the Net ZEB concept and work with some sustainable approaches like designing high quality dwellings to attract families that would otherwise move to the less sustainable suburbs. I part of the project was to verify the zero energy demand and a high comfort indoor climate via simple calculations to detailed climate simulations. The Integrated Design Process insures the students to incorporate many different factors and make the needed iteration to achieve an integrated design solution with a very high technical and architectural quality. Sophie was part of a very professional group that had a good workflow and was well organised. They were always well prepared for our meetings and responded well to my comments and remarks and we had some good discussions concerning their project and architecture in general. One of by first questions when addressing the groups is, what the ambition for the project is and what level of work they are willing to put into it. They were quick at responding that they had high ambitions and wanted to add more to the given project. And they did not disappoint. They created a project of very high quality that went beyond what was expected of them commenting the current architecture and made a project that can work as a case study for future students and architects Although in a group Sophie stood out as a very well informed student with a good insight in both architectural and technical aspects. She has a very friendly personality and a sympathetic person to be around. It has been a true pleasure to work with Sophie and I look forward to follow her future work. I can only give Sophie my highest recommendation for her future employer and collaborators.
