    • XML Editor and Research Assistant
      • Sep 2014 - Apr 2015

Responsibilities I worked as an XML Editor for the Greek and Roman Studies Department of the University of Victoria. I worked under the supervision of Professor Laurel Bowman and Mr. Greg Newton to code an interactive website called MythsOnMap. The project used out of copyright translations of Greek and Roman mythological texts in order to create a website where students, faculty, and people interested in mythology could explore the overlap of myths and texts in the ancient world. The XML code was used to link characters, groups, places, and special events in mythology to other documents on the website in order to show the intersectionality of myths and history. AccomplishmentsIn my time working for the MoM project I helped complete the XML markup for the Samuel Butler translation of Homer's Iliad. The Iliad has 24 chapter like books that detail thousands of characters, places, and events that needed to be marked up for each individual instance. My time was spent proof reading the Samuel Butler version and writing the XML to connect the text with the corresponding files. The Iliad portion of the website had been under development for 5 years when myself and my corresponding XML editor took over and we managed to conquer the last 8 books of the Iliad in 8 months and prepare the text for publication on MoM. Skills Used Time Management, Attention to Detail, Basic Programming Skills, Research Skills (to verify the geographical coordinates of ancient locations whose names are no longer in use)Project link: http://myths.uvic.ca/

Responsibilities My employment with the University of Victoria Medieval Studies Department was a research position supervised by Professor H. Cazes. The assignment was to execute a research project to be published on the department’s MediMap website. The job required me to set my own schedule and execute extensive amounts of research, self-editing, and revisions in order to make the project polished and publishable. At the end of the project I presented my research on Geoffrey Chaucer's diplomatic voyages at the Medieval Studies Student Course Union Conference in February 2014. Presenting my research gave me valuable experience in public presentation and confidence in an academic environment. Accomplishments At this employment I was able to contribute to a small scale University research based website that gives students the opportunity to work on publishing, editing, and research skills as well as contribute to a student run conference. My involvement in the project helped expand the website into a new research area not previously explored by the project's contributors and my involvement in the program lead to my contribution at the student run conference. After completing my research and ending my employment with the department I went on to be on the 2015 Medieval Studies Student Course Union Conference committee where I was in charge of the call for papers and the catering for the event. The conference was a success and I gained valuable conference planning experience. Skills Used Time management, editing, research skills, academic writing skills, attention to detail, precision, communication, and planning skills.
