Sophia is one of the best writing professors I've worked with. She is very supportive of her students and highly knowledgeable as a writing instructor. Her class is always informative and interactive. Not only is Sophia a leader, she is patient and works hard to truly understanding each and every one of her students and offers the time and effort to help her students improve. She even brought her class together to write and publish an anthology! If given the chance, I would definitely take her course again.

Created and managed a volunteer program that addresses JFCS clients’ isolation and their need for socialization, enhancing the quality of life and self-sufficiency for many of Portland’s most vulnerable population. I researched and wrote the volunteer program's mission, handbooks, and other supporting documents. My teaching pedagogy is based on two principle ideas. First, that craft, grammar and strong composition can be honed by the practice of analytical reading and imitation; and second, that a vibrant community is essential to academic growth. As an Instructor, I strive to build strong classroom communities by asking that my students be accountable to one-another and respect each other’s commitment to education. In return, I am accountable to my students¬– to always be teaching materials I find relevant and exciting, and to evaluate assignments thoughtfully, with generous feedback. I maintain a positive, active relationships with past students, and understand that a teacher's influence extends beyond classroom walls. Show less

I created and followed a hands on, community-centered pedagogy and syllabi that teaches Jewish culture and identity, navigating issues of social justice though a Jewish lens, and beginning Hebrew. I believe that supporting a cultural museum means an exchange of ideas and upholding the communities’ priorities. Under the guidance of tribe elders, I planned annual events such as the strawberry festival and the tribe’s Pow Wow. I used my connection to Southampton patrons and the local University to obtain funding for writing workshops and demonstrations of traditional Shinnecock arts on campus. Other duties of the job included grant writing, data management, event set up, and collaborating with board members, tribe elders and other like-minded cultural institutions. Show less

I worked to support this nonprofit's mission to steward the past and present of the Presidio Neighborhood and to inspire preservation advocacy by managing the education and visitor service teams and by partnering with like-minded nonprofits to organize community events. My background as a writer allowed to tell the stories behind El Presidio’s site, engaging visitors and donors. I’m particularly passionate about acting as a liaison between education and development departments, as more often than not, these teams are sides of the same coin. Show less
