I have had the pleasure of supervising Sophia since she was a first-year student in 2016, when I hired her to support our annual Alumni Weekend. Sophia was the perfect candidate for one of our esteemed registration students, who serve a critical role in being the first line of contact to greet and welcome alumni to campus. It was clear from very early on that Sophia is a stand-out student and truly has something special. Due to her exceptional performance throughout Alumni Weekend, I encouraged her to continue her involvement in advancement by becoming the Philanthropy Fellow. In the Fall of 2016, I worked directly with Sophia on a one-on-one basis to revive and build the College’s Phone Outreach program. I was so impressed with her ability to conduct independent research, present her findings for collaboration with me, and then take our conversations to develop a clear and thorough final product – as only a sophomore. When the Phone Outreach program began, I was thrilled to be able to trust Sophia enough to take the lead on training our team of student callers. She was so dedicated to the program that she voluntarily attended every single call shift throughout the semester to supervise and guide the student callers, who respected her as a leader and felt comfortable with her as a resource. Sophia has also been heavily involved in the department’s planning process for Giving Tuesday in 2016 and 2017. She was able to lead our student engagement plan and social media efforts, and on the day of the campaign, Sophia was there the entire day – ready to do whatever needed to be done, with a smile on her face. I truly believe that we would not have been able to increase our student donor number on Giving Tuesday by 517% in one year if it hadn’t been for Sophia’s participation. As if the aforementioned contributions to our department (and her countless other campus involvements) aren’t enough, Sophia also spearheaded the development of our new student engagement program, Seahawks Advancing Graduate Engagement. Our office has been interested in creating a student engagement program for years, but Sophia’s commitment to the project made it happen. With the support of two other student leaders, Sophia researched programs at other colleges, adapted her research to St. Mary’s College, and formally presented a plan of action to our office, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Alumni Council. It is no secret amongst my colleagues that Sophia is a rock star and an easy favorite of our department. She is the first student we depend on to represent at donor recognition events, in branding sessions, on student panels, and in presentations to the Board of Trustees. She is mature, reliable, and professional beyond her years, and she never fails to impress all of the alumni and donors she meets with her outgoing, cheerful, articulate, and knowledgeable disposition.
