As a Postbaccalaureate fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), I work in the Chung Lab, a section on pediatric diabetes, obesity, and metabolism. This is part of the Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Obesity Branch (DEOB) of the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disorders (NIDDK). My lab focuses on understanding the association of biological, social, and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of pediatric diabetes, obesity, and metabolism. The Chung group aims to improve the early detection of Type 2 Diabetes, transition care for youth into young adulthood upon reaching 18, and the overall treatment of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. To achieve these goals, I manage an Outpatient clinic (OP9). This involves regularly following endocrine patients & participants in clinical trials. As a coordinator, I recruit, enroll, and facilitate communication with all patients and participants and function as a participant advocate and liaison. I also work to manage a Research Lab (5SW Metabolic Unit) along with my team. The laboratory duties include study set-up, blood centrifugation, stool collection, and analysis. The research responsibilities consist of data analysis, data processing, and assisting in generating abstracts and papers for publication. Lastly, I advocate for our youth through community outreach in schools and work with collaborators nationwide to provide population-specific evidence that will help shape future screening and therapeutic obesity and diabetes prevention strategies. The Chung lab ultimately aims to eliminate diabetes-related health inequities across the lifespan by enhancing disease prevention and developing population-specific risk models in adolescents and young adults.
