Sonja is an exceptional individual able to be a kind friend and a highly professional team member at the same time. As a volunteer coordinator she went beyond her role to give every intern an opportunity to grow, develop and enjoy his/her assignment. Sonja let me learn new skills, including leadership, team collaboration, management and many more. She takes any task very seriously and knows exactly how to perform and exceed what is expected of her. She is a great manager who ignites, unites and makes an entire team deliver.

I would work with Sonja again in a heartbeat and highly recommend her to any future employer! Throughout her time at the Council her devotion to continuous learning and keen interest in constant improvement was evident. Although I could write a long list of her excellent qualities what stands out to me was her ability to cultivate meaningful relationships with volunteer program stakeholders and her ability to manage multiple and competing priorities with ease. If I could say anything about Sonja, it would be that if she puts her mind to it, she will accomplish it, and she will do it with a smile!

      • Nov 2010 - Sep 2011

I will oversee the Operating Grant process for the new statewide CSD AmeriCorps Program. The Center on Self Determination at Oregon Health & Science University, in partnership with State and local disability agencies and organizations, The State Commission on Volunteerism (Oregon Volunteers), and the OHSU Foundation are planning for a new AmeriCorps State Program. The proposed program will recruit and train AmeriCorps members with diverse abilities that want to serve individuals with disabilities in their communities. The CSD AmeriCorps Program will provide well trained AmeriCorps members with and without disabilities to serve for one year in disability based organizations to facilitate their meeting the needs of their consumers; and the ability of all persons to become volunteer service leaders. The CSD AmeriCorps Program will recruit, train, place and provide on-going support to 10-15 members and their placement sites per year throughout the state of Oregon. The team of AmeriCorps members will be trained in areas of self determination, independent living philosophy, self and systems advocacy and will facilitate and support the movement of persons with disabilities toward employment using the “Take Charge” model. The goal of this project is to create strong working partnerships between disability-based groups, volunteer programs and state service agencies throughout the Oregon. We will do this by systematically meeting with potential placement sites to collaboratively asses the needs of both urban and rural communities. Show less
