A long, long time ago I went to catering college in Bristol. This led to work in many restaurants in Bristol. Fed up of split shifts and week end working I moved to Weymouth where I got a job at a holiday camp with split shifts and weekend working. A job in a good restaurant followed but I chose to work for the MOD as a cook. Some weekends but no split shifts. Government closed the base down where I worked , so I, newly engaged to a sailor moved to wiltshire. A job followed with the National trust , but too much bull shit for me, so I left. Had a baby, got married to the sailor, and now have retrained and work as a learning support assistant with particular skills in maths and cooking! May 2018, The school now have a purpose built kitchen for the children to use. A great teaching space to work from; it is currrently used weekly for an after school cookery club. Part of the year 6 teaching is a project called " Come dine with us"where a group of children plan, buy, cook ,serve and eat a meal to an invited guest from outside school. Guests have included local Head teachers, the vicar, health leaders from Wiltshire council, specialists in childhood obesity and most amazingly of all I managed to get both Lotte Duncan (chef, author, broadcaster) and Ping Coombs(Masterchef winner 2014) to be our guests. I plan to hold a 3 day crash cookery course for young adults about to leave home for uni this summer. This is being managed by my daughter as part of her application for an innovation course at uni. October 22 A new head teacher is due to start at the school where I work. I hope that she will see, even in a tough time for school funding, that food can be used as such a great learning resource. Most subjects through primary have a food link and this can really encourage reluctant learners to see the reason why they are learning something. Fingers crossed! Show less
