Bio
Phillip Compeau
Son and I are "academic brothers", in that we shared the same PhD advisor while at UC San Diego. Our advisor was Pavel Pevzner, who leads a lab that is difficult even for very capable students to work in. Son's work ethic is unparalleled. At one point during graduate school between leases, I contemplated sleeping in my office. Son slept in his office for a period of weeks at one point, working on both a project as part of his degree and an additional research project in what little spare time that he had. Son is also a gifted lecturer and capable teacher; so much so that Pavel and I invited him as a guest lecturer for our online courses, and his lecture videos have received thousands of views. Finally, the skill of giving very harsh, very fair criticism to someone on their work is a very rare skill. Son understands that when something is produced (in my case, a written draft chapter for a textbook), this is just the very beginning of a process of ripping it to shreds to make it far better. And then starting the process over again, as many times as it takes. He is able to internalize that process as well, which is even more rare.
