PhD Candidate in Mechanical Engineering
-
Apr 2021 - Present
I am working as a PhD candidate as part of the NWO-funded RELEASE (Reversible Large-Scale Energy Storage) Consortium focusing on the use of electrochemical methods for clean hydrogen production and energy storage. My research project focuses on the production of hydrogen peroxide (instead of oxygen) at the anode of an electrolyzer in order to increase the economics of renewable energy storage via water electrolysis. My work includes the creation of a scalable electrochemical device as well as an accompanying computational model which will be validated by experiments. Show less

Master's Research Student | Synthesis and Characterization of Thin-Film Lead-Free Perovskites for PV
-
Jan 2020 - Aug 2020
I performed a research project that explored replacing lead in third-generation solar cell materials called perovskites. This class of materials have very high efficiencies, but typically contain lead, which leads to concerns of lead toxicity in the environment. Thin films of the perovskites were synthesized in a glovebox and analyzed using various spectroscopic techniques and time-resolved conductivity measurements. The dissolution of the precursor powders to form the perovskite solution used for spin coating was also analyzed using Density Functional Theory. Show less

Industrial Trainee | Laser Ablation for Precise, Scalable PV Module Synthesis
-
Aug 2019 - Dec 2019
Conducted a research project involving using a laser to enhance perovskite solar cell fabrication. Laser ablation was used to create a high-voltage mini-module on a research cell area. This work demonstrated a scalable, automated, and precise pathway for contact cleaning of spin-coated PSC's, and will likely be integrated into the group's fabrication methods to create a fully automated, research scale PSC production line. Chinmaya Mission Yuva Kendra is a global group of Hindu young adults who are seeking to better themselves through service and reflection. We have a created a student organization chapter at the University of Minnesota that meets weekly for lecture and discussion sessions. As young adults we spend a lot of time trying to perfect our outer image for schools and employers. CMYK helps us to develop internally by studying Hindu texts and analyzing their messages as they apply to our daily lives. CMYK has allowed me to take a step back from working towards professional development to reflecting on how I want to develop personally as well. Show less

Research Intern | Synthesis of Supports for Next-Generation Graphene Membranes
-
Sep 2017 - Dec 2017
My work at EPFL was an independent research internship concerning the production of a novel nanoporous support for ultra-thin membranes. Membranes such as graphene and nanoporous carbon films require extremely smooth supports with high flux and permeance. Current support creation techniques are either too costly or cannot be scaled up effectively for industrial use. My work involved creating a membrane support using sintered metal and ceramic powders to achieve a well sealed, ultra-smooth, scalable, porous support. The project was executed independently and involved fabrication, optimization, and characterization of the supports. Show less

Bhan Research Lab Assist | Kinetic and Mechanistic Studies of Heterogeneous Catalysts
-
Sep 2015 - Aug 2017
The three projects I have worked on in Professor Bhan's lab were 1) the mechanisms and functionality of transition-metal carbide catalysts, 2) naphtha dehydrogenation over Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia, and 3) kinetic and mechanistic studies of acetic acid hydrodeoxygenation over molybdenum carbide catalysts. Through the aforementioned projects I have gained hands-on experience working with Gas Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, X-ray Diffraction, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy instruments and techniques. I have also integrated mathematical modeling skills in Matlab to create thermodynamic calculators using available literature for the examined reaction systems. Show less

Athlete and Assistant Commodore
-
Sep 2014 - Jan 2016
In addition to being an athlete on the team, I was training to take on the responsibilities of the rowing team Commodore (equipment officer). Volunteering as the Assistant Commodore has given me an insight into working efficiently with larger entities (UMN Recreation Sports Office) to accomplish goals, as well as how to communicate, plan, and execute as part of the Student Leadership Board. I left the team in order to better balance my personal health and studies, but the dedication and skills I learned from my time with the team will stay with me. Show less
