Within the Health + Technology Track, we incorporate various aspects of academics ranging from engineering to public health in order to address real world challenges, in which we use to design an innovative and impactful end-of-semester design project. For the Fall 2022 semester, the Fung Fellowship has collaborated with Hopelab in order to address the design challenge “How might we promote youth mental health and well-being in the next digital era?”. For the Spring 2023 semester, my individual design group is currently working with a community based organization in Davis, CA to find more effective ways to uplift and support the breast cancer survivor community. Within the Robinson/Gaw Lab through UCSF’s OBGYN department, we utilize a number of laboratory techniques and research practices to investigate the effects of chemicals (including PBDEs) on fetal liver cells. Techniques including PCR, RNA isolation, spectroscopy are all utilized in order to address our overall research question of the impact that certain environmental factors/chemicals have on maternal and fetal health. Under the supervision of Dr. Timothy Brown within the School of Public Health, I worked along 6 other interns as we investigated the impact of race/ethnicity within physician-patient relationships. Our research included dissecting various scholarly articles in order to compile a sufficient amount of data to investigate our research question. The paper was published with all interns featured as publishers. As an intern for the Stanford Summer Community College Pre-Medical Program, interns were immersed in an intense summer-long program in which we were exposed to various topics within medicine and health education and we created a number of research project investigating different health inequities and proposals for policy change. The program was offered fully remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and interns were presented with different networking opportunities to further their careers as minorities and transfer students in medicine. I served as a peer tutor at my community college tutoring/mentoring students in college-level biology and Mexican American history courses. Throughout my workshops, I assisted students with lecture questions and created learning plans specific to fit the needs and learning styles of each student. In order to make the most out of my interactions with my students, I attended monthly staff meetings where I collaborated with peers during team-building workshops to strengthen our ability to match the learning styles of various students.
