    • Mechanical Reliability of 3D Printed PLA
      • Aug 2015 - Jun 2016

3D Printers are machines that are currently used for rapid prototyping; however, their commercial viability has not been studied. One method of evaluating the reliability of a 3D printer is to study the variation in material properties from various print jobs, such as the variation in fracture strength. However, different figures of merit may be needed for different materials used with the 3D printer. For example, the Weibull modulus, m, is used as a figure of merit to quantify the variation in fracture strength of brittle materials like ceramics, and thus can be applied to brittle polymers like Poly Lactic Acid (PLA). As a part of this project, a statement of work was made, a test plan was created, and the execution is still under way. Show less
