I had the pleasure to work with Sjoerd during his internship at ADVA Optical Networking. Sjoerd is one of the best students I ever supervised, quick in understanding involved technical stuff, efficient in tranferring his ideas into software and with a clear solution-orientated attitude when exploiting the results.

I had the chance to supervise Sjoerd van der Heide during his four month intership at ADVA Optical Networking SE, Germany. Together, we experimentally investigated maximum likelihood sequence equalization in combination with a channel shortening approach for PAM-4 as one possible solution for next generation of intra and inter data-center applications. During his internship, I got to know Sjoerd as a highly motivated and very smart student with exceptional programming skills. Thus, I can highly recommend anyone to work together with him.

Working towards my master’s degree, I did a four-month internship abroad at ADVA Optical Networking in Germany. During this internship I developed a digital equalizer based on maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) for a 112-Gbit/s intensity-modulation direct detection optical transmission system. The work included theoretic understanding of digital signal processing and optical communications, algorithm implementation in Python and validation of the results in an optical communications research lab. The work resulted in two paper presentations at European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) held in September 2016, one as first author and one as co-author. The grade I received for my internship work is 9 out of 10. Show less

    • Mentor for Masterclass Bicoloured Fiber Optic Transmission
      • Feb 2012 - Mar 2014

Mentoring secondary school (VWO) students to complete a project on fiber optic communication. The aim for the students was to get an analog and a digital signal over a single fiber simultaneously using wavelength division multiplexing. The analog signal contained music and the digital signal contained the corresponding metadata such as artist information. I mentored this project three times in a row.
