Because Bishop Leroy Matthiesen had recommended me to Bishop Placido Rodriguez, I continued to do basically the same things I had done while in the Diocese of Amarillo. And most of the activities/services/meetings were done in Spanish because the population was largely Spanish-speaking. Religious Education was always done in English because parents wanted their children to be proficient in English. Designated as such by Bishop Leroy T. Matthiesen (of happy memory!), I was responsible for all the activities of the parishes ( I lived in the parish rectory, and had a mission, also), was given authority to conduct Worship Services in the Absence of a Priest, and could preach at them, when necessary -- because there wasn't always a priest available as Sacramental Minister -- met with the Parish Councils, Finance Councils, and Religious Educaiton Catechists & helpers. In effect, I was "La Pastora"... Show less

    • Director of Religious Education
      • Jul 1974 - Jun 1982

I was actually Director of R.E. at St. Alice/ Sacred Heart/Our Lady of Guadalupe Parishes in Plainview, Tx. This meant that I scheduled (and taught some) the classes for elementary, Junior High and High school for the three parishes, dealt with training of the Catechists, and met regularly with the C.C.D. Board to enable the smooth running of the programs. I maintained the attendance records as well as the registration records for all. And, of course, participated in the various activities and services of all three parishes... Show less

Then I began to teach Religion Classes, and a Senior elective on Psychology, and helped the Assistant Principal with scheduling all the classes/teachers over the summer months. Eventually, I was named Assistant Principal and Dean of the Freshman Class (and moved up with them until they were Seniors!), and continued to teach part-time. Finally, I went back to teaching Religion Classes & Psychology, with some Counseling. Early on, I taught Latin I and II, and was a part-time Guidance Counselor. Basically, I did the same things at Sacred Heart Elementary School, McAllen, as I did in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, with the addition of working as director of the Parish Elementary School Choir, and updating the School Library. I was the main instructor for all subjects in the two parish elementary schools in which I served: for 7th & 8th grades at St. Eustachius' School in Portageville, and for 1st & 2nd grades at St. Ambrose School in Chaffee, Mo. Back in the '60's that's how each classroom was -- self-contained! I also supervised playground at Recess, and the Lunchroom at lunchtime.
