An investigation of antibiotic producing bacteria in grassland and hemlock forest soils extracted from the Smith College. MacLeish Field Station, MA.- Aimed to discover novel soil bacteria that produce bioactive compounds that inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis that are safe relatives of carbapenem resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus which are clinically important antibiotic-resistant pathogens.- Worked to determine what soil factors, such as carbon and nitrogen content, contributed to the presence of high number of soil isolates with the ability to inhibit Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Interdisciplinary Study of Bioaccumulation of Mercury in Largemouth Bass from Northwestern Missouri-Conducted field work in Gallatin, MO (08/20/2015 – 08/25/2015) to investigate the bioaccumulation of Hg in largemouth bass from eight farm ponds in Daviess County, MO, USA. Evaluated the relationship between biogeochemical cycling of Hg within the environment, and the bioaccumulation of mercury in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Recorded fish lengths and weights, extracted muscle samples, froze them for further analysis of total mercury using a Teledyne Leeman Labs Hydra IIC Hg Analyzer.- Surveyed pond owners about the current status of public knowledge of Hg bioaccumulation in local fish species and evaluated community impact. Interdisciplinary Study of Mercury Concentrations in Five Fish Species from the Grand River in Northwest Missouri -Analyzed long nose gar (Lepisosteus osseus), flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from the Grand River, a tributary of the Missouri River, USA. - Studied the biogeochemical cycling and bioaccumulation of mercury to propose a relationship between length and mercury concentration. Recorded fish lengths and weights, extract muscle samples for analysis of total mercury via use of a Teledyne Leeman Labs Hydra IIC Hg Analyzer. Funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
