• Selected by a St. John Fisher Research Grant committee to carry out research on heavy metal concentrations present in Lake Ontario. • Carried out soil extractions and water filtrations to determine amounts of heavy metals present in and around Lake Ontario, using the Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (GF-AAS). Heavy metals included cadmium, nickel, lead, and mercury. • Identified that the levels of lead and nickel were an entire order of magnitude higher in soil samples than recommended by the EPA, which was a catalyst for research into reducing these levels of heavy metals.
