David Griffiths
His achievements to date leave me in no doubt that he has many years in educational leadership ahead of him. Kind, reflective and strategic, he plots the pupils academic and holistic development in KG & Primary with real, tangible, evidenced success. His style enables him to challenge pupils, colleagues and parents alike. With many children in Secondary (to include those pupils who return to visit us from England) acknowledging the support, guidance, and influence he has had in shaping and supporting their development. For colleagues, good humour and a collegiate environment. This is evidenced in School and also in the numerous activities he runs for the community. Collectively we started the Changzhou Giants staff and community rugby team. However, it didn’t take me long to be able to retire (again) to the sidelines to watch in support. This team has travelled across Asia competing with varied levels of success in competition. Simon recognises the importance of being part of the local community and in making positive contributions to it. This led to his fund raising exploits with the Changzhou to Tokyo (& back) Rugby World Cup fundraising effort in support of the Changzhou Orphanage. This involved all the pupils, staff and parents and raised significant funds and awareness for the charity. In all areas of school life his commitment and service to others have enabled me to watch on with real pride as each year his accomplishments and growth lead to more opportunities for our pupils and staff to excel. Wycombe Abbey School, Changzhou, is regarded by many as the best school in China. Simon’s contribution in helping us achieve that goal, one set all those years ago now, cannot be underestimated.
Sam Thurgood
Simon plays a huge role within the dynamics of Wycombe Abbey, Changzhou. Within, he leads a thriving school that is going from strength to strength both in terms of numbers, but also the quality provisions that are provided to our pupils both in and out of the classroom. Simon is a head that demonstrates all different types of leadership, but crucially is a visible presence within all aspects of school life, whether that be in the classroom, teaching sport in the world class facilities, or on the musical stage. He provides a wonderful example to the pupils in his care and acts as a tremendous example to his staff. Outside of his primary responsibilities, Simon has been the figurehead for the Changzhou Giants, a predominantly staff based rugby team that competes all over China and Asia. His time and dedication to providing opportunities for staff to follow passions, socialise and network with both western and Chinese people is hugely appreciated amongst the staff body. He certainly had a huge impact in supporting me with the move from the UK to China.
