Conducting technical interviews with clients’ senior technology staff in order to develop an understanding of the technical characteristics of the projects undertaken and be able to advise on IP strategy. Holding discussions and asking the appropriate questions to gain an understanding of clients’ existing patents and explore whether a product/process currently being developed has the potential to be successfully patented. This includes undertaking detailed patent searches to evaluate whether clients’ technology is novel and inventive compared to known technology. Providing advice and assistance to our clients in relation to filing patents. This includes reviewing client prepared scientific documentation / patent application, providing advice in relation to the quality of the application and guidance to produce a robust application. Interacting with external patent attorneys to ensure that patent applications are positioned and presented to take full breath of the Patent Box tax benefit scheme. Providing clients with strategic direction, such as, what additional project data, tests, experiments are required with a patent application and with the overall future IP strategy. Holding meetings with clients’ senior technologist to gain an understanding as to how their patented technology is used within the business and assisting the EY Patent Box team in preparing documentation for the tax authorities. Supporting the team in identifying the patents across our clients’ businesses and assist in calculating the income streams required for the patent box calculations. Assisting the EY Patent Box team in lateral thinking for innovative approaches and solutions to compiling Patent Box claims based on the company’s circumstances and available data.
