I was part of the IPNS team managing a network that includes over 700 units of live Cisco network equipment (mostly routers and switches), providing access for over 7000 users for all the ESB divisions (Electric Ireland, Telecoms Ltd., Networks Ltd. and ESB International). The ESB network estate also includes 40 firewalls and wireless access controllers.I specified, sourced, designed and configured routers and switches for deployment, e.g. ESB Broomhill migration from Promina to MPLS and routers for deployment to wind farm sites. The IPNS laboratory was fully utilised, i.e. I built several networks including one mimicking the ESB Telecoms Operation Centre (TOC) ring, as part of a Telecoms project. This network currently employs EIGRP as a dynamic routing protocol and I was testing the feasibility of deploying OSPF in order to granularise their network of approximately 100 network nodes across Ireland to reduce the EIGRP overhead and increase the number of broadcast domains. More recently this mimic was successfully used to test ABB Multiplexer units employing OSPF.The ESB have begun the process of switching from traditional PSTN phones to IP phones using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). IPNS are involved particularly in the application of Quality of Service (QoS) and traffic-shaping in order to guarantee levels of service in addition to the management/provision of the VLans and subnets essential for the voice network.
