I got to know Simon during my time at the JKMRC where we frequently discussed research concepts, in particular, the role of flotation in geometallurgy. With his background in physics, Simon brings a unique view and scientific contribution to minerals processing research, an aspect for which he has enormous passion as demonstrates through teaching, research and his active role in the industry. In my years of working with Simon, I have seen him communicate effectively not only at the academic/scientific level but he has demonstrated a unique way of accurately and clearly articulating the challenges and opportunities facing the minerals industry. The successful Industry Geometallugy course organised by Simon in October 2017 is a testimony of his passion for science and his ability to seamlessly integrate scientific understanding with industry needs and opportunities. May he live long and prosper!

Simon worked with me to develop a new service offering: Project Optimisation. His understanding of advanced geometallurgy was exceptional with a talent for interrogating the drill core data using Principle Component Analysis. The analysed data then served as inputs to the Whittle Enterprise Optimisation platform, allowing other flowsheet options to be considered which improved the NPV and generate a robust project. I am confident that Simons skills will help to answer the problem miners are facing with declining grades and difficult to process ores.

I am a technical problem solver across multiple sections of the mining industry. I am working in geometallurgy and mineral processing in the Circular Economy Solution (KTR) unit in GTK. I work with the GTK pilot scale plant run by MINTEC at Outokumpu. I am engaging in the strategic development of Critical Raw Materials (CRM) in context of mineral deposits in Finland. I also work in and study the role and influence of energy for the global industrial ecosystem.

I have come to GTK in Finland to work on the Mineral Intelligence project. This will involve the mapping and assessment of mineral assets in Finland in context of their Critical Raw Material profile. Strategic development of how each of these minerals will be mined and then processed will be developed in context of some of the supply issues facing Finland and Europe. Part of this will be understanding of the challenges facing manufacture and recycling of those metals.

Senior Research Officer role at the University of Liege in the GeMMe department. I was working on applying geometallurgical techniques and methods to the area of industrial recycling. I was be working on the area of Urban Mining, or Reverse Metallurgy. My task was to help develop the technical capability of GeMMe and interact with the recycling industry at the European scale. Geometallurgy is the natural place for me as its magic is in the data relationships between different technical disciplines. I form a conduit between the technical profile of an operation and the economic profile of an operation. I assist with and empower corporate decision making by generating data models of process based ore behavior. In doing so, my clients can make decisions that are more defendable and quantifiable. Areas of interest are multi-phase data analysis of geometallurgical data sets, modelling the mining process as a system, experimental design, industrial recycling and industrial sustainability.

The Green Rubber Project is directed primarily at providing a cost neutral strategy to overcome the claimed extensive difficulties and costs involved in recovery of end of life tyres from mine sites, many of which must be classified as “remote” sites. These end of life tyres can be processed into rubber products and/or used to extract diesel fuel with the pyrolysis technology.
