For the past 20 years I have worked for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service responding to operational calls, which I continue to do today, being on call at Truro Fire Station when I’m not working at the College. For the Past 13 years I have worked within the Fire and Rescue Workforce Development (Training) Department where my role involved not only training the firefighters but setting up all the training courses such as Fire Behaviour, Hazardous Materials, Road Traffic Collisions, Working at Height and confined Space etc. I also as part of my role had to manage maintenance contracts and perform general maintenance as well as develop and construct the fire behaviour facility which involved welding and fabrication. This inevitably led to the management of most of Health and Safety within the Training Department, writing risk assessments and method statements along with the management of COSHH and equipment servicing and maintenance. During my 20 years in the Fire Service I have gained experience and knowledge within a wide variety of challenging environments. I have a practical approach to managing Health and Safety with prevention being the focus rather than implementing reactive measures. I was also, 2-3 years ago, part of a working group that worked towards the Fire Service achieving the OHSAS 18001 accredited level of health and Safety. OHSOS 18001(officially "BS OHSAS 18001:2007") is an internationally applied British Standard for occupational health and safety management systems It exists to help all kinds of organisations put in place demonstrably sound occupational health and safety performance. It is a widely recognised and popular occupational health and safety management system.
