  A fresh challenge to re-establish a Quantity Surveying and Project Management practice that had declined and as such had no employees or workload. Fortunately as the practice formed part of a group of practices that encompasses DWA Architects an initial workload was available to provide the company with a welcome starting point. I built the department to a team of three highly motivated and dedicated individuals and was confident that our workload would increase sufficiently to add further staff as the practice progressed. I remained strongly involved with the project work however in addition I looked after all the day to day running of the practice with assistance from the group’s accountant. We demonstrated a strong commercial approach to all projects and remained profitable through careful management of each individual project and the overall workload. The resurrection of the practice involved providing a professional Quantity Surveying, Project Management and Planning Supervision service for existing clients of DWA Architects plus new business sourced via my marketing, networking and previous contacts. Projects ranged in value from £50,000 to £40,000,000 and were from varied construction sectors. To assist the steady growth of the practice I became heavily involved with many forums based in both York and Hull and I was a regular attendee at the York, Harrogate, Scarborough and Hull Chamber of Commerce events.   Project management, planning supervision and quantity surveying of retail and leisure projects from £15,000 to £5,000,000 including roll out programmes. Predominantly fast track projects. Developed the project management department within the practice to a three person team from just myself and was promoted to head up the project management in 2001. A further promotion to Associate Director was achieved in April 2004. Strongly involved in the marketing of the department, plus the interior design and architectural departments, with new and existing clients. Provided commercial direction to assist Clients ability to envisage possible returns from the projects. Generally involved in the obtaining of the Client’s brief, the matching of the service to the brief, the agreement of professional fees along with their monitoring and billing to achieve maximum profitability. Between the three project managers we control approximately 30 projects on site at any one time and generally co-ordinate both on and off site through all stages of the development. Key achievements include the development of the department and the implementation of workable office/site systems to ensure commercial, professional control of the projects. Show less
