The main focus of my thesis is the study of the application of electrospinning, which is a process to fabricate non-woven nanofiber mats, in water purification. The electrospun mats show promises in the filtration application because of high porosity and highly inter-connected pore spaces; however, electrospun mats are also compressible, which could diminish their attractive pore properties. Therefore, my thesis consists of a fundamental study of compression of electrospun mats under hydraulic filtration, and application of that knowledge in oil/water separation and desalination.Specialized skills:- Fabrication of nanofiber mats- Characterization of the mechanical properties of membrane- Characterization of separation properties of membrane Show less
