Programme Leader, Programme Manager

1998 - 2010
I was responsible for the management of applied research programmes on natural resource management and governance in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa for seven years, with annual budgets of CA$10-20 million. I led multi-disciplinary teams of professionals from diverse cultures, funding applied research, and building and supporting research capacity in developing countries. In 2006 I co-designed and staffed the Climate Change Adaptation in Africa programme, a CA$60M action-research programme co-funded with UK DFID, which I oversaw until 2010.

As a Rockefeller-funded Agricultural Sciences Fellow, I contributed to the early development of on-farm participatory research and interdisciplinarity at the Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility Programme in Nairobi, Kenya. I coordinated an EU-funded project on the biological management of soil fertility in four countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. I conducted extensive survey research, participatory on-farm experimentation and environmental monitoring in Kenya and Zimbabwe. I undertook my PhD research at CIAT on the geography of cassava cultivation in South America. I made practical contributions to the roll-out of post-harvest cassava processing enterprises and value-chain development in the region. As a Postdoctoral Fellow, I helped to design an exhaustive study of cassava in sub-Saharan Africa, conducted research on land-use change in Central America, and contributed to the development of CIAT’s strategic plan for the 1990s.
